When you ask women to write down the must-have basics in your closet that can be mixed with many items, I’m sure many of them write down the pencil skirt. I, for one, have feared wearing a pencil skirt, especially before I began accepting my body and accepting that beautiful could be more than what the media was feeding me.
I’ve been reading many blogs where women of different sizes and shapes were wearing pencil skirts, and they looked gorgeous. It began to dawn on me how amazing those skirts look on different bodies, so I decided to pull out my never worn Kiyonna pencil skirt that I had purchased awhile ago on clearance and test out the pencil skirt waters.
This pencil skirt is a faux wrap skirt with draping, so it’s not your typical pencil skirt. Those who have read my blog from the beginning may recognize the top I’m wearing. It’s a dress I bought at Macy’s and you can see how I’ve worn it as a dress here and a skirt here. I bought the skirt because I thought the draping would camouflage my tummy, but it doesn’t, and I no longer care that it doesn’t make me magically flat-stomached. Wearing the dress underneath did cause some issues of fabric getting scrunched up under the skirt, but ultimately I was really happy with the look. I’ve raved and raved about this lace before, so you all know how much I love it.
I really find this pattern so intricate and beautiful. I think it will forever be my favorite lace item that I own!
I added on my Lane Bryant leather jacket, which for me is much more interesting and fun than a simple, black cardigan. You can also spot my Torrid thin, braided belt that I used on the waist of the skirt.
I added this daisy ring from Forever21 because I liked how the holes in this ring mimicked the lace detailing on my top. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a great picture of it during my outfit shots.
Overall, I found myself feeling very confident in this outfit, which is kind of funny since I had thought that a pencil skirt would unleash a mess of insecurities. There’s a reason why a pencil skirt is a staple in many people’s wardrobe; it’s powerful, sexy, and chic. I will definitely make sure I have a well-made, well-fitting pencil skirt in my closet from now on.

I could rave about that lace all day! This outfit is fantastic – you’re doing an amazing job of remixing the dress into so many different looks.
I used to hate pencil skirts for similar reasons. I remember seeing this on Kiyonna’s website but I wanted it in gray. It is a great twist on a classic piece!

I love this look! You look fabulous in that skirt and lace top! I have the same fears about pencil skirts and the tummy like you mentioned but it really looks great on you – fears begone! I think it’s all about finding one that really makes you comfortable 🙂 I’m still hunting but you’ve given me new hope haha!

I love pencil skirts. I actually did a post today, wearing a pencil skirt (no shameless plug intended). They are the staple of a girl’s wardrobe, no matter what size you are. You don’t even need that many; black, navy blue, denim can cover just about any occassion. Great post!

I really love these look! I have two pencil skirts and I wear them all the time. I normally wear then to work for a business sexy look (the tighter the better LOL). But I realy like how you made it less business and more about the fun. I’ll have to try this look for sure:)

I love the draping on this pencil skirt- its awesome! And could that lace dress be anymore sweet? NO!
I shared this fear of pencil skirts myself, but a few years ago I got a denim one at Avenue, and I will forever be a convert!
I just ordered a new pencil skirt from Kiyonna, but it is currently at the tailors because it is way to long on me- I cant wait to wear it before its a zillion degrees!
Yeah, I think once you find one that you like, you know what to look for in the future. I can’t wait to see how you style yours. I’m sure it’ll inspire me to try new things. I need to get this skirt slightly altered. It’s loose in the waist area only, so I don’t know if that can be fixed or not.
Fixing a loose waist is totally fixable, and one of the easier fixes I know of! I get my skirt back from the tailor on Tuesday next week, so of course I’ll post and OOTD- I cant even wait…

i love pencil skirts, and obsessed with the dark denim one i bought from LB a few months ago. it helps give me an hourglass figure (although i’m certainly not flat-bellied either). i’ve recently realized the pencil skirt is the perfect solution for me to pair with too-small-tops. i cannot even count the number of tops i have that are too short and too tight… i like the tightness across my bust and hate it on my belly, so tucking them into the pencil skirt is a recent revelation (that i plan to blog about soon).
Oooh, that is a really good idea! I always have a problem with tops shortening, so I may have to try some of those out with the skirt.
