OOTD: Crossing Boundaries

Whenever I go shopping I tend to think about my style, if an item fits within it, and whether it’d work with the rest of my clothes in my closet. Sometimes that can be a great way to shop, but then I think about all of the items I liked but were out of the bounds of my “style”. One of the greatest things about plus size fashion blogging is getting to know others’ styles, and sometimes I find myself crossing the boundary of my style to try on one of my fave bloggers’ style. Georgina from Cupcake’s Clothes has a style all her own and rocks the babydoll/Lolita look to perfection. It’s not my style, but she definitely influenced me with today’s look, especially in two of her recent posts with black dress: here and here.

I’m not typically a short dress kind of person, but Georgina’s style made me want to try out the look, and the lace gives the dress a babydoll feel.

To make the look my own I added my new suede red heels that I’m totally in love with (and they’re actually comfortable!) and darker lipstick. I also decided to try softer curls by using my straightener as a curling iron and a braid across the front. I liked how it looked, but 2 hours later I’m sitting here with straight hair again.

I’m not in love with the sleeves being so sheer, but the camera makes it more apparent than just seeing it in person. I added some sparkle with an old cocktail ring from Target and earrings from Forever21.

I’m also wearing my favorite new nail polish called Ruby Ribbon by Revlon. It’s the perfect deep red, almost muddy red.

Shop: Dress (Evans), Heels (Target), Earrings (Forever21), Ring (Target), Nail Polish (Revlon)

Lesson learned today? Trying clothing that’s not necessarily your “style” can be really fun, and letting other bloggers influence your style means you get to push your self beyond your own clothing boundaries, and you just might find that you feel a little saucy in a little black dress, which is always great.

What bloggers influence your style? Any clothing items you’ve recently been eying that crosses the boundaries of your typical “style”? Tell me about it in the comments! ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Oh my!! I love that dress? Where did you find that little beauty?

I tend to be fairly shy about my knees (bizarre, I know), and used to favor really long skirts, but I’ve recently found myself purchasing dresses that fall (gasp!) either at, or an inch or two above, the knee. My thinking is that with a pair of tights, they’ll be perfect for Autumn, and will hopefully give me a chance to get used to wearing shorter dresses!

    1. Thanks! I got it at Evans (Evans.co.uk). I have knee-phobia too. I love tights though because I feel a bit freer to wear shorter things. Can’t wait to see what you pair with tights on your blog!

  2. I love this dress on you! That’s a great length
One thing that generally doesn’t suit my day to day style is lots of cleavage but lately I’ve been dressing out of my comfort zone because so many summer dresses that keep me cool are styled that way.

But I would never know this dress isn’t your style — you look fabulous!!

    1. Thanks, Joy! Yeah, I typically don’t go for apparent cleavage clothing, but those deep v’s have been calling my name! P.S. I can’t seem to find your blog.. not sure if I lost the link or not. If you see this, please post it so I can continue reading! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I dont think I have a “style” as much…certainly not as distinctive as Georgina’s is. When I was a teenager & in my early 20s I definitely had a style – skater girl! All baggy jeans, vests & numerous bracelets, tattoos & piercings. My style has definitely still got elements of that these days but I mix it up a fair bit.

Enough about me – I really like the dress on you. It emphasises your your small waist & I dont think the sleeves look bad – before I read your comment about them I was actually thinking how flattering they were. I find Evans dresses to always run on the short side. I often try & counteract that by sizing up – it sometimes work!

    1. Ahh, would have loved to have seen you as a skater girl! I tried to be a skater girl when I was 15/16, but that just included wearing certain brand names. Not very authentic!

Thank you for the compliment, Claire! I’ll have to try the sizing up tip some time!

  4. very cute. where did you wear it? i feel like i need more occasions for pretty dresses! but maybe i should just wear ’em to the grocery store.

    1. Thanks! I wore it to a nice(r) restaurant. I felt a little out of place because it’s one of those restaurants that some people dress up for, but others come in wearing jeans. I always feel like I don’t have occasions for my fancy clothes… grocery stores might just be my try out area, too. Or I can go around saying “I’m going somewhere special later” like a loon ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Oh, I love this dress on you. So very cute! Where did it come from? I can see it being something I would wear. Even with the sheer sleeves.

I take little bits of trend from all corners of fashion and try to make them work with my style, wardrobe and body. There is so much out there and I like a lot of it:)

    1. Thanks Sarah! I got it from Evans, but it’s sold out not unfortunately. I think that’s great to take little bits of everything. My aunt’s house is very ecclectic, and I’m always amazed how she makes everything work together.

  6. Hello there! Sorry I havn’t read your blog for a while. (like forever) I have really missed it but I havn’t started my computer for… weeks? More???? Strange.

Anyhow. LOVE that dress. So cute. With some read details it could easily be a christmas dress. And you are even more pretty then I remembered.

  7. Wow, it looks beautiful.

Iยดm a new reader of your blog. And i like it :). It gives me self-confidence to wear fancy fashion in plus size.

    Thanks for it!!!!!
