I wish I could come on here and show you all the lovely decorations and moments of my Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but I was too caught up in the moment to really document much of the weekend. I did get my sister to take some quick shots of my Christmas Eve dress, which kind of turned out horribly since she and I didn’t notice that my belt was all twisted up. I suppose these few shots are all I can ask for when I rely on the goodwill of my family members to take time to snap a few photos.

I wore my Alex + Ava dress that I purchased on Black Friday, which ended up making me way over dressed compared to my jeans and sweater clad family. This happens to me all of the time. All that we did for Christmas Eve was go out to dinner together and then come back home to play a few games, but I like to take the opportunity when it comes to wear a dress.

Out of all the pictures we took, this was the best, which is really, really sad.  I was kind of looking like a hot mess, but big holidays are always kind of a balance between the warm fuzzies and complete and utter madness, so I’m going to pretend it works. I had worn the dress before with black heels and decided I wanted to try it with gray. I also added the red purse because the pattern was busy enough that I didn’t want to add another color or pattern to the look. Since the other pictures were awful, I dug back out the pictures I took earlier this month that I neglected to post since I didn’t do much with the outfit.

FYI: Often times my facial expressions in pictures make me die a little inside. This picture was no exception.

Overall I like the dress, but it’s definitely only to be worn when you’re willing to mess with it all night. It’s a real wrap dress, meaning parts can become unfolded when you wish them to remain folded. I also think that sometimes I need to give up on having wavy hair, haha :).

As for the rest of my Christmas weekend, I had a lot of fun being a bad blogger. I got my Kindle Fire which is already nestled safely in a Kate Spade case and I spent a couple hours playing Harry Potter Clue with my cousins. I watched Christmas movies under the glow of my family’s fake Christmas tree and witnessed Lola bouncing on every guest and trying to bop them on the nose (lovely, eh?).

My sights are already set on the new year. 2012 holds lots of exciting opportunities for me, and for the first time in my life, I’ll be leaving academia without set plans to return as a student. I’ll be traveling to Boston to participate in a Fat Studies conference, and I’ll hopefully be able to meet lots of you at FFFWeek in NYC. This girl is growing up! (even if I can’t manage to wear a dress without a belt twisting in every which way)

I want to hear about your New Years Eve plans. How will you bring in the new year? And, of course, what will you be wearing when you do?!

  1. The first picture looks great. The dress looks stunning on you! You’re silly! I can’t tell that anything is wrong. But I know how you feel. As time goes on, I get a little less picky with what I think looks good/not or just don’t care!

Having other people take your picture can be frustrating. I appreciate it… but nobody wants to tell you when something is out of place or looks funny! But I’m learning to live with it… I posted pictures recently with a migrating belt. I figure that in real life – my outfit (or hair, makeup, etc.) is going to be wrinkled, rumpled or malfunctioning in some way, so at least my pictures are authentic!

Grey and bold red pairs really well with the dress. Love the dress and the bag so much. Are the black/grey wedges those Target ones? I really wish I would have made it to the store to try those on. Some of their summer wedges worked really well for my feet (unusual) and those looked very similar.

You’ve been such an influence on me lately… I really love the pieces you’ve been buying and tweeting about – even though I’m trying to stay far, far away from accumulating more stuff. 😉

    1. Thanks Nicole! I held back the really bad photos! Very true about it capturing real life, but I swear something is always off: my hair, makeup, clothing, the lighting, having a dog toy in the background. #facepalm They are the Target wedges! The only high shoes I can wear haha :). And thank you, thank you, thank you for the last comment. Means a lot to me!

  2. We are definitely our own worst critics, because if you hadn’t said anything – i wouldn’t have noticed the belt. I love it with the red bag. I love pattern, and this one is so pretty!

  3. I was talking about you the other day. I was telling someone that with so many blogs out there where the person wears a 14, 16, or 18… I truly enjoy your blog because you look fabulous while rocking a larger size. And that to me is what should inspire people. The smaller sizes can shop in plus & regular size retailers but you… you may not have as much of a selection to choose from but you look fabulous always and you just… inspire me. I hope this comes across as a compliment… I really do mention and love your blog alot 🙂
I love this look also… that dress is HOT!!!

  4. That dress looks great on you! I love it with the grey shoes and red bag– they look perfect with it.

We’re having friends over for New Year’s Even and making cocktails. I think I’m going to wear a cute bubble hem dress (I think that what I just said actually exists… the skirt of the dress has a band at the bottom) with leggings!

  5. Oh I so agree with everyone, that dress looks fantastic on you! I love it! I wish wrap dresses were easier to find, they are so great for all sizes yet I never see them in plus sizes. And I don’t see anything wrong with the pictures either, they’re great!!

New Year’s is always just a quiet evening at home for us. Appetizers, board games and movies for the night. Nowhere I’d want to be ringing in the New Year than at home with my family.

    Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks Jolene! Usually in plus I see the faux wrap that can fit funny sometimes. I never understand why certain dress styles aren’t offered in plus sizes. It’s so stupid. Appetizers+board games+movies sounds great to me! Hope it was great!

  6. So pretty! I almost bought that dress too. . But, decided not to since reds can be iffy on me. It looks so gorgeous on you!! Argh. Dress not buying regret!
