Let’s Run Away to a City in the Sky

The past couple of weeks of life have been a lot of stressful, a bit emotional, and at times overwhelming, so I was really happy (and lucky) that I had already planned a little trip with my sister to Asheville, a small city in the mountains of North Carolina. A couple short years ago, I lived in a mountain town, so I absolutely enjoyed getting back up there, breathing in the mountain air, and getting a change of scenery from the norm.

Here’s what I did:

My sister and I started the day by going to breakfast at Tupelo Honey Cafe, a Southern-inspired restaurant.

I wore my ASOS dress and got a couple looks like I was weird. Apparently, dressing up for breakfast is a no-go in Asheville.

We waited 20 minutes to get it! Definitely worth it though 🙂

I watched the cutest doggy meet-up.

We visited a chocolate shop.

And a lot of other people also had to get their chocolate fix.

View from the hotel. You can see the mountains peeking out the back!

We decided to go out and do some shopping (of course).

Love this store, The Funky Mutt. Has the cutest dog toys.

Star lamps at the Chevron Trading Post and Trade Co. I bought two rings from here that will show up on a post soon, I’m sure!

We then went on the LaZoom comedy city tour, which I highly recommend if you happen to visit Asheville.

Our lovely tour host

Sister Perdition who was helping us “rid our sins”

Sister Perdition is also quite talented at swallowing flames. No big deal.

The funniest thing that happened was when Sister Perdition ran off the bus and our tour host yelled, “Watch out for the crazy nun!” The people on the street actually ran away from the guy playing Sister Perdition (notice the woman in the red coat). HIL-AR-IOUS.

P.S. Sister Perdition had quite the lovely socks, eh?

We went by some cute houses on the tour.

Swatted at a roach

and picked up drunk spring breakers before the tour finally ended with my eyes watering from my allergies going crazy (and laughter). Gotta love that!

On the way home we stopped by the French Broad River…

spotted a house you couldn’t miss…

found and old railway bridge that inspired me to change into a 90s inspired look for Five Take…

took some pictures that made me glad I was only 2 when the 90s began

and heard some ghostly creaking of the tracks before running for the car to return home.

All in all it was a good trip. It helped me forget about the issues I had going on, and it let me take a break so I could better face them when I got home.

Have you ever taken a short getaway when you need a break from life? Where do you run away to?

  1. Looks like you two had a great time! Glad you could get a well deserved break. I’ve done a few weekend get-aways and it definitely helps my stress levels. I’ve been considering taking a weekend away every few months and exploring local cities. It would be relatively inexpensive and fun!

My favorite place to “run away” to was Bodega Bay, CA. Unfortunately, I haven’t been in almost 2 years. I’d just get in the car, drive 1.5 hours, hang out by the ocean, walk on the beach and usually grab a meal at one of the local seafood places. Like some of the best clam chowder I’ve ever had! I’ve been doing more and more traveling, so my “running away” lately is usually to visit my parents. Which is kind of weird considering the amount of time I spent wishing I could be anywhere else! 😉

    1. I totally get that. My parents’ house was where I ran away to during college. I still find a lot of comfort here. I would love to live an hour and half away from the beach. I guess I get that with the mountains :). Now that you’re moving to Texas you have even more reason to explore every once in awhile!

  2. Looks like a great little trip and like you had a good break! I want to see the Carolina’s so bad one day. I’m looking forward to July when hubby gets holidays so we can go on a little road trip here, seems so far away right now!

Feeling a little old reading that you were only 2 going into the 90’s, I graduated from HS in the early 90’s and was married with 1 child and another on the way by the end of the 90’s LOL. One of my favorite looks from the 90’s though(and one I’ve seen popping up again!) was the high waisted pencil skirts with built in suspenders, worn with a white blouse and black tights. I worked in the mall and on any given day you could easily see half the women working in the mall wearing that style. Glad I wasn’t curvy back then though, no chance you would find stuff like that in plus size back then, now thankfully we get cute styles for curves too.

Oh, and I would have been dressed up for breakfast too, I think you looked great, love the pattern!

    1. I hope you get to! It’s very pretty here and mild weather-wise. (Plus we have yummy barbeque!) Yeah, plus-size fashion has gotten SO much better. I wish I had what I have now during high school. I was so limited. (and yet probably had more options than my sister who graduted in ’96).

  3. We are mountain girls! I am from Avery County. Ashville has alway been the “big city” we went to to go shopping. It has become quite a progressive city. I am from just up the mountain. Yes, you keep going up the mountain and climb and climb the winding roads. Black mountain to Marion then on up 221. It looks like you took in the city in grand style and had a great time. It looks like you had beautiful weather. I so need a get away. I would drive down to Nags Head which is about an hour from Norfolk. You need to go there sometime, it is definitely a unique place. Jocky’s Ridge is where the Wright brothers sailed their airplane and the world has never been the same since. The beaches are very nice and the light houses are great to look at. The shops are great. I liked what you were wearing on the trip. You looked so cute in your dress with the booties and the jean jacket. And the french braid added the perfect vacation touch. Your skin is flawless and beautiful. Now back to work. Another Sunday night before Monday. Take the beautiful trip with you when you go back.

    1. Ahh! I interned at the high school in Avery County and worked at the outlets in Blowing Rock. I definitely love the mountains! I went to the Outer Banks 2 summers ago and absolutely loved it. My friend lives in Elizabeth City, so we stayed at her place and drove out there. As for my skin, far from flawless. I’ve always had acne problems, but the sun bleaches it out in pictures.

  4. You always look so cute. Love your weekend ensembles.

These days, I don’t really have anything I feel the need to run from (thank goodness!), but when I need a break, I love going to the beach or just taking a short road trip with my husband.

Back in my late teens/early twenties, I was having a hard time with my mom and stepdad. They were awful to me. I got called names every day and told how worthless and pathetic I was – EVERY day. My dad died a couple years prior and I was in such a depression. I saved my little bit of excess cash from my job and moved 3000 miles away to live with some friends.

    And it was wonderful.

    1. Aw thanks! I’m sorry you had to deal with that as a teen/young adult, but very happy you got away and are now in a loving place. I always like short road trips with people I love. A little sense of adventure is enough to make any where you go more fun :).
