Summers used to be synonymous with spending every day out on the lake or bicycling through my neighborhood with other kids in the area. Since I wanted my days to be action packed, I rarely spent time or attention on summer clothing when I was a kid (but then again, I could barely be bothered to brush my hair until I was about 13). These days, summer equals my temporary, full-time office job with the need to appear somewhat presentable, but I still want my summer looks to be as easy as possible.

For those days when I don’t have the time or desire to dry my hair or even wear pants (ha), braids and maxi dresses become my best friends.

I love the intricate print and colors on this maxi dress! As soon as I saw it on Forever21’s website, I knew I’d have to take a gamble on it. F21 clothing doesn’t always fit, but this dress fits with room to spare. It has elastic above the bust line and below it, which kept me feeling very secure in its sleeveless design.

The print had blues, purples, oranges, and greens, which opened me up to accessorize with whatever colors I wanted. I chose to go with the green accents in the bottom of the dress and added small earrings and a snake ring.

The green color of the stone in my ring worked in my favor, but the honest reason I wore it was because I had received it that day. Not every item you wear has to be so thought out or “make sense”. Sometimes it’s fun to just wear something you like even if it doesn’t go with your outfit.

Forever21 maxi dress, Old Navy cardigan (similar), Urban Outfitters ring and earrings

I’m kind of in love with the easiness of this outfit. I’ve already worn the dress multiple times for boat rides or for when I get out of the lake from swimming. It’s become my go-to cover up piece, but it’s still nice enough to wear out to dinner with friends.

What’s your “easy” summer time look?  Do you consider maxi dresses as easy to wear?

P.S. I leave for NYC to attend Full Figured Fashion Week in 11 days!!! I’m so excited (and a little nervous). Let me know in the comments if you are also attending!

  1. Love this outfit! I love dresses they are super easy and stylish. I think you have the prettiest green (hazel?) eyes too!

  2. Love the dress AND the braid. T also love my maxi dresses. They’re my, “I can’t think this morning” go-to outfit, and it is like I get to wear my nightgown to work for the day! My dresses are mostly in the silky/stretching material which is comfortable but sometimes warm. Wish I could find more in cotton, which would be cooler, but often that material does not lay nice on me, and I hate to iron…..

  3. I love this dress on you!
I really need to find a good maxi dress for summer.

  4. Such a cute dress!!! It looks good on you & I can see why its a go-to outfit for you. My go-to item is my khaki bermuda shorts. Its so easy to accessorize and goes with all my tops! I will be attending FFFWeek in NYC too! I can only attend one day so I hope we can meet! NYC can be intimidating but dont be nervous, youre gonna have a ball!!

  5. I guess the maxi dress craze has been everywhere for a while now, but I’ve just woken up to it lately. I love your dress, absolutely beautiful! I really like the cut out detail at the neckline.

I’ve been thinking about wearing a Maxi to work a lot recently. They seem like a great option when it is SO humid that you don’t want clothes to touch you. My only fear is that, since I’m so short, it will be difficult to find the right length dress. Maxi dresses are not easy to wear if you are constantly tripping over the hem..

  6. Love the look! The braid really sets it off nicely. I am all about maxi dresses in the summer . . . love them! Not gonna make it to FFFWeek this year, I’m afraid. Had planned on it but then my day job got in the way. *lol* I went to the very first one back in 2009 . . . will be psyched when I get to make it back! In the meantime I will be expecting a full report 😉
