I never really considered myself a “modest” dresser until I started blogging, but I think that modest is a good term to describe my style. Half my shy-ish personality and half my profession, I tend to choose more covered up styles, BUT I still like to wear trends and figure out ways they work for me. I’ve been seeing crop tops all over blogs for over a year, and plus size bloggers have shown over and over again that there are so many ways to wear crop tops, and actually of all the skin showing trends, it’s probably the most demure.

I could see myself wearing this style with skin showing at the beach, but I wouldn’t wear that on a day to day basis, so how do I then wear the style? Well this past weekend I went shopping with my friend Brittany to a fancy-pants Forever21 that had a large plus size section. The only item I saw that I wanted was a crop top (which was lucky since I am pretty much out of their size range waist down), and as soon as I tried it on I was thinking of various ways to wear it. I wanted to wear it in a way that drew attention to the scalloped hem, which was my favorite part of the top.
I paired it with a bright blue maxi skirt from Old Navy. Most crop tops I see are a bit more flowy and oversized, and this one is fitted on me, but I still liked being able to work with proportion by choosing where my skirt sat on my waist and how much of the lace from the crop top laid over it.
I chose scalloped edge studs as well and simple sandals to complete the look.

So this was my first dip into the crop top pool (okay, maybe more like putting just my toes in), but I really love the end result. I could ramp it up with more accessories if I ever wanted, but for me this is the perfect running errands–meeting friends for lunch–daily life look.

You look smashing in the black crop top with the maxi skirt. I really like how you showed off the scalloped hem of the top. I also like the crop tops in the photos you shared of other bloggers. Crop tops are not typically my thing but if I found one I really liked, I’d give it a whirl. 🙂
I love this crop top. And you wear it very well. The scalloped hem does add great texture and detail to the top. I haven’t worked up the nerve to wear a crop top yet, but I could definitely see myself in something like this.

I love the way you were very tasteful in using your crop top. I hate something that is too short and I am constantly pulling at. I have a few tee shirts that have shrunk at the bottom and I am constantly pulling at them. I hate it! As cute as they were at one time and as carefully as I washed them in cold water, there were times when I accidently put them in the dryer. I have heard that you can restore their shape. I would like to do this. I do not want to show one of my worst features, which is my stomach and tummy scar. Let the young do that. I like to maximize the positives and minimize the negatives. I cannot stress how much I admire yours and how you used it. It is beautiful and I love those colors on you.

I think this looks really lovely and ladylike. It’s probably how I’d dip my toes into the trend, too. I’ve been considering an oversize crop tee, maybe with a floral graphic or text print, paired with a flouncy tulle skirt. A la Carrie Bradshaw. Fun and flirty. I wouldn’t have thought to pair the crop with a long, columnal maxi skirt like you’ve done here. It looks very sophisticated and chic.I love that you took the trend and made it work for you and also stepped out of your comfort zone a bit while still staying true to your style.

I like your outfit, especially the combo of colors and the lace … but I have to admit that I’m not a fan of the crop top. When I see photos with womens’ bras or breasts showing below the hem of the crop top, I find it to be sloppy fitting and disrespectful dressing. What area of skin, and how much of it you decide to show, is always a personal decision. For my taste, it’s painful to see so many women baring so much and leaving so little to the imagination. Many women modeling plus size “sexy,” “rockin’ ” clothing — with everything hanging out — are simply selling themselves short.
Hi Daylily, thanks for your comment. I have to agree with one part and disagree with another. “always a personal decision” — I love that fashion is a personal decision. I always approach different trends and talk solely from what I am comfortable with and what I like to wear. I don’t agree that women are selling themselves short or that it’s disrespectful to show tummy skin or whatever else (responding to your other comment), and I don’t think fat women should be held to different fashion rules than thinner women. I guess I have a live and let live attitude when it comes to fashion, and I’m not sure what good comes from applying morals or narratives on women who choose to dress differently than me — in fact, it’s why I posted images of other plus size bloggers wearing crop tops in different ways. Thanks for sharing your views, and I hope you understand why I have chosen to speak mine here.
I like the color pairing and lace of your outfit on you. Letting the lacy dark top provides the right touch of texture, while the long column of blue is uncluttered and classy.
But I’m not a fan of crop tops in general. Especially on women of substantial size, the view of tummy skin … or the view of a bra or breasts showing below the crop top’s hem … simply looks like sloppy dressing and disrespectful style … and I mean disrespectful to themselves. Sometimes I wonder if women who dress with nothing left to the imagination really see themselves as attractive, or if they simply want to prove that they’ll do whatever it takes to get people to look at them. That’s not self respect and courage. It’s selling out.
Stay true to your style. In the long run, it’ll serve you well. 🙂
