In early spring I visited the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC with my sister. I picked up a small historical book with pictures about the town, the building of the estate, and the workers. I found myself really in the mood to read a biography, so I found this book which covers the Vanderbilt family, mostly the New Yorkers, and just a little about the actual descendant that built Biltmore. I really, really enjoyed this audiobook. The pacing was right, there were interesting historical facts, and there was a lot about family dynamics, expectations of parents and children, creating a fortune, coming into society, and losing a fortune (for some). This was one of my favorite reads of 2016, and it put me on the path of reading more about turn of the century rich New Yorkers.
